DAP1802: Vulnerability of Mid-Wave Infrared Thermal Imaging Systems to Current and Future Laser Weapon Threats (Safeguard-FLIR)

The research project aimed to assess the vulnerabilities of mid-wave infrared sensors to in band laser weapon threats, which could cause sensor jamming, dazzling, and damage to the Belgian Navy. The project also extended to RPAS systems for maritime deployment. It was a four-year applied research proposal that aimed to mitigate the laser weapons threat to existing surface vessels and RPAS. The project provided guidance to the Belgian Navy and contributed to NATO scientific workgroups through laboratory experiments, simulations, and countermeasure assessment.
